Friday, July 29, inflation continues to rise in France. Butter is one of the products that has seen a sharp rise in prices with an additional 10% since the start of 2022.

Used as fat at the bottom of a frying pan or to put on sandwiches, butter is an essential product on French tables. Yet, in all its forms, the price of butter has risen sharply. Its price has seen a 10% increase since the beginning of January, which makes consumers think twice before buying it. “It becomes very very complicated to be able to eat properly”laments a woman. Yogurts and milk are also among the dairy products that have seen their prices increase.

Butter is used as a raw material for many companies, such as biscuit factories. “100% butter, that is to say that there is no other fat than butter so it is about 15% of the recipe”says Christian Structurecookie. Per year, the quantity of butter used is enormous, with nearly 250 tons purchased. “Today this is a problem for the company in terms of profitability”adds Christian Structure. The rise in prices has its source in the lack of producers and an increase in demand.
