Tuesday, June 7, inflation affects many food products. Among them, meat, the price of which has risen in recent months.

In a butcher’s shop in the Paris region, merguez sausages cost 19.90 euros per kilo. However, here, the price increases have not yet been passed on, because the boss has decided to cut back on his margins. “Lamb, pork and poultry have increased by around 10 to 15% (…). If I pass on, inevitably I will lose goods“, explains Didier Lemoult. In supermarkets, frozen meat has also increased by 18%, and the price of minced steaks is up by 14.5%. As a result, 46% of consumers buy less meat.

The price of fertilizers and that of fuel contribute to the rise in meat prices. The profession is asking for salary increases, and food self-sufficiency in France. “If tomorrow we are forced to import meat that comes from very farI think it won’t be good for anyone”predicts Jean-François Guihard, president of INTERBEV.
