Inflation also affects animals. The price of their food jumped by 15% on average. This situation worries the SPA which sees the number of animal abandonments climb.

In Mérignac (Gironde), a little cat has just been put up for adoption, like 90 others who are already. The Bordeaux SPA recorded a 40% increase in dropouts over one month compared to 2022. “There is this financial question. There is the increase in the cost of kibble, litter and veterinary fees”, explains Amanda Pirois, communication and adoption manager. Within the shelter, 193 dogs are cared for, walked and maintained.

[La facture] EDF took 40% between last year and this year”, explains Kheit Larcher, the director of the refuge. For now, the establishment is doing well, but it could become difficult in the long term. On the animal market, the price of products jumped 15%. Some owners are forced to make choices. Animal protection associations are worried at the dawn of the summer period.
