The Indonesian jungle of Borneo is home to the last orangutans. Threatened with extinction, there are now less than 60,000 of them. Rehabilitation zones have therefore been created to try to save the species.

Orangutans live in Indonesia or Malaysia. The species is now threatened, so some are trying to save them. To meet them, you have to go to the jungle of Borneo (Indonesia). Bordered by a river, aboard a tourist boat, with a little luck, it is possible to admire the primates.

A retired Canadian couple came to start a three-day jungle cruise. After several hours of navigation, the first monkeys appear. “It’s an absolute delight to see my first orangutan, wild, in the middle of nature“, rejoices the woman.

60 to 80% of the orangutan population has disappeared

The scene is increasingly rare, as the orangutans are threatened with extinction: 60% to 80% of its population has disappeared. There are now less than 60,000 left. In question, forest fires, massive deforestation but also poaching. In an attempt to save as much as possible, rehabilitation areas have been set up in the jungle. Every day at the same time, a team feeds the primates who live in total freedom. Most are in rehabilitation to the wild after being captured.
