Corsican independence activist Yvan Colonna died on Monday March 21 after three weeks in a coma. Sentenced to life for the assassination of the prefect Erignac, he had been attacked in the prison of Arles (Bouches-du-Rhône), by a radicalized fellow prisoner, on March 2.

Yvan Colonna died on Monday March 21 after three weeks in a coma. A rally was organized in the evening in Bastia (Corsica), in front of a church near the Old Port, with Corsican songs. Another stood in front of the Palais de Justice, calmly, with the slogan: “French state assassin”.

Tuesday, March 22, high school students met in front of the prefecture of Ajaccio, with some of their teachers. Most of the Corsicans encountered call for respecting the time of mourning. Two investigations, one judicial, the other administrative, are underway to understand what happened on the morning of March 2, behind the walls of the prison in Arles (Bouches-du-Rhône), when Yvan Colonna was hit and suffocated by a radicalized inmate. For three weeks on the island, demonstrations have followed one another in a sometimes very tense climate. The government has since initiated discussions on the island’s autonomy.
