Preventing the risk of accidental fire is now the mission of the gendarmes on motorcycles in the heart of the Cévennes, because since Friday July 8, it is forbidden to walk in the forests of the Gard. Officers patrol trails and tracks DFSIpaths reserved for the circulation of firefighters. Very quickly, they come across two vehicles in violation. The fine can go up to 750 euros. But the gendarmes today favor prevention.
The situation is not always easy to explain to foreigners, like German cyclists. However, the risk is always present. In a campsite of Besseges (gard)barbecues are prohibited. “Even if we take precautions, it’s too dangerous to use it”says a tourist. Walks in the forest and forbidden barbecues are the direct consequences of a summer marked by drought.
