Ile de Noirmoutier (Vendée) is a victim of its own success. The real estate pressure is not new, but it has increased since the containment of March 2020. It is difficult for people who work on the island to be able to buy or even rent.

Every morning and every evening, Romain Gendron comes from the continent, half an hour away to work in Noirmoutier. He is originally from the island and works there, but did not settle there: the calculation was quickly done, even counting the gasoline costs. In Noirmoutier, this has been a problem for a long time. The island has 66% of second homes. It is difficult to find housing for workers all year round, and the health crisis has worsened the problem.

Prices have exploded this year, with, among other things, the arrival on the market of teleworkers, fleeing confinements. The situation is such that a hairdresser on the island struggles to find employees unless they pay their rent. The mayor of the main village of the island may have the beginning of a solution: a construction project of about fifty individual houses, an eco-district. For this, he asks the’Estate to put the island under real estate tension.
