In the Var, volunteers are creating a shared garden to rehabilitate land. With the help of an association, their production is then distributed to vulnerable people.

In Hyères (Var), with 300 days of sunshine per year, residents have long been nourished by fruits and vegetables produced a few kilometers from the city. Wheat has replaced fruit trees, but a few hectares of wasteland have been rehabilitated. The gardeners planned to plant 250 olive trees on land lent by a farmer to an association. The work is in permaculture, as close as possible to the natural cycle of soil and water.

A first shared garden in 2021

The olive trees replace trees uprooted around thirty years ago by farmers faced with global competition. Young people also participate in the development of the garden. It all started with a garden in 2021. Thanks to public funding, one hectare is already cultivated out of the 10 available. Vegetables are intended for vulnerable people. An association has been working with the collective garden for two years. Volunteers prepare vegetables for homeless people.
