The bird flu epidemic continues to spread. Of more than 160 farms affected, two thirds are in the Landes. With this fourth crisis in six years, the model of small farms is threatened.

An outbreak of bird flu near the farm of Julien Lafenêtre, in Doazit (Landes), has been detected. All his animals must be slaughtered for the third time in six years. “Stinging and picking up ducklings are very difficult times to live with“, explains president of the Landes farmers’ association. He had nevertheless strictly respected the drastic safety instructions, which had required him to invest 28,000 euros. According to him, permanent health constraints threaten his farming method in outdoors. In 2021, the producer hashad already lost 200,000 euros in turnover.

A few kilometers away, in Mugron (Landes), Serge Mora has decided not to buy any ducks this year, anticipating a new wave. Successive crises with catastrophic consequences on the younger generations. Serge Mora wants to continue for the moment, counting in particular on compensation from the State. He will receive an envelope of 50,000 euros for the epidemic of last year.
