In Strasbourg, workshops to introduce women to turntables and train future DJs

Because in the nightlife world, 90% of DJs are men, the Dodekazz association launched the Wom.X project, which aims to introduce and train women to the decks. Since July, 200 of them have taken part in the workshops organized in Strasbourg. #IlsOntLaSolution

To blow a wind of equality on the decks in an electro scene still largely dominated by men today. This is the objective of the Wom.X project initiated by the Dodekazz association in Strasbourg, which wants to increase the presence of women in electronic music. And at the same time, erase this feeling of not being in one’s place, very common according to Céline Petrovic, teacher-researcher specializing in the question of gender and at the initiative of these workshops. “For women in electro, as professionally, they often struggle against the impostor syndrome and they do fifteen times more to feel legitimate. So in general, they are quite strong those who are there“.

The Wom.X project therefore offers introductory workshops (DJ and Prod) at affordable prices: only ten euros per session supervised by female DJs who already mix in a club. But also round tables, moments of discussion, 100% Wom.X evenings, and a meeting space to allow the emergence of collaborations, projects, collectives …

The opportunity to restore confidence to these young women like Julie, a law student who dreamed of going behind the decks but who did not dare: “I realized that the reason I hadn’t gotten to the turntables yet was because it was an exclusively male world. And it’s really thanks to these workshops that I learned to mix, so it’s the feminine universe and the fact that we are at ease that made me get started there.“.

On its website, the association specifies that the Wom.X project is intended as an incubator to highlight and bring out new talents and that it is “reserved for women, and for non-binary and trans’ people, because in a field mainly composed of men, differentiated behaviors can emerge, leading to discrimination and inequalities“.
