South Korea: in Seoul, a “climate card” for public transport – (France 2)
In Seoul, South Korea, a climate card will be launched in 2024. For 45 euros per month, users will be able to benefit from unlimited travel on almost the entire public transport network.
Take unlimited metro, bus lines, self-service bicycles and future river shuttles, with a single subscription. To limit CO2 emissions and traffic, Seoul (South Korea), 10 million inhabitants, will launch its “climate card” on January 1 at 45 euros all inclusive. Can it really continue to reduce car use? Jean-Noël Leroy has lived in Seoul for seven years. During the week, this 37-year-old Frenchman spends three hours a day on public transport. “That’s at least 90 euros per month, if we take the journeys every day”he says.
Motorists convinced?
Between the cost and the time spent each day commuting, he was about to buy a car. The announcement of the launch of the climate map today makes him hesitant. “It’s worth the cost of continuing to take transport”, he admits. For eight years, Lee Woo Bae has been driving around Seoul. He saw the city gradually paralyze due to traffic. He finds the climate card attractive, but is reluctant to part with his car. “I sometimes need it in an emergency”he argues, even if he plans to “use it a little less”.
