The patrollers intervene on the roads, in full traffic, to ensure the safety of motorists. Sometimes at the risk of theirs.
Frank Legendre and Benedict Blot, both operating agents for the DIR Ouest, go on patrol. On the Rennes bypass (Ille-et-Vilaine), they work a few centimeters from vehicles traveling at 90 km/h or more. “Users pay moderate attention to us, if at all, so we really have to be hyper-vigilant as soon as we intervene, as soon as we get out of the vehicle“, noted Benoit Blot.
The danger they face can sometimes kill. Since Frank Legendre works in Rennes, two of his colleagues lost their lives on the side of the Breton roads. “My job, I love it, and I’m not here to get killed”entrusts the operating agent. Most accidents are material. Since the beginning of the year, there have been 12 in the Rennes sector. The prefecture is therefore issuing a call to order to limit dangerous behavior on the road. Since 2015, 153 DIR Ouest vehicles have been hit during an intervention.
