In Menorca (Spain), in the Balearic Islands, local elected officials in the village of Binibeca Vell have decided to impose restrictions to deal with overtourism.

It is the most photographed village in Menorca (Spain). Binibeca Vell is a delight for tourists. Its cove and its white houses attracted 800,000 visitors in 2023. Far too many for the residents who denounce sometimes inappropriate behavior. “Some people climb on the terraces, come on the balconies to get the best photo”, complains a resident. Nicknamed the Spanish Mykonos, this small fishing village is expected to welcome a million visitors this year.

Measures have therefore been taken: certain alleys are closed in the morning and evening and the number of buses transporting tourists has been reduced by half. Vacationers and traders are divided. “It’s true that we are not always respectful towards residents so I understand”, indicates a tourist. The owners of Binibeca Vell will meet in August. They will decide whether the restrictions on visits have been sufficient or whether they permanently prohibit access to the village.
