Thursday, May 5, the Russian flag flutters in Mariupol in Ukraine, a city almost completely under Russian control. Only the Azovstal factory, where civilians are said to have taken refuge, is resisting.
The Russian flag flies in Mariupol (Ukraine), Thursday, May 5. Most of the city is under Russian control. City signs, in Ukrainian and English, are replaced by signs in Russian. Some prepare the commemorations of May 9, the day of the victory of the USSR over Nazi Germany in 1945. “We give a hand to restore parks and monuments before the 9th, so that the citizens of Mariupol can mark this holiday”explains Denis, a volunteer.
The Azovstal factory, the last pocket of Ukrainian resistance in the city, was reportedly bombed by the Russians on Thursday, May 5, despite a ceasefire. “The blockade of Ukrainian units continues around the sawmill. In some areas, with air support, the enemy has resumed operations to take control of the place”, says a representative of the Ukrainian army in a speech. Russia believes that the humanitarian corridors are working.
