Since their selection, they are on a small cloud. These 13 dancers, aged 10 to 15, have achieved a real feat. But this success story comes at a price. 40,000 euros. In order to live their dream, they multiply the steps to find money.

On February 18, the hip hop dance group Start 2 Step Academy wins the title of vice-champion of France. A sesame for the world event of the discipline which will take place next August in Los Angeles. Only problem. You have to finance the trip: plane tickets, accommodation and meals on site. A kitty has been launched on the internet.
Hip-hop geniuses
For these Ile-de-France residents, it’s still spring vacation. But the days are busy. Every day, they head to the dance hall of the Start 2 Step association where they train for three hours. In three and a half months, they will meet the best hip-hop dancers in the world. And it is not a hazard. For a year now, these young prodigies have been winning competitions and wins. “We would never have imagined taking a trip abroad, winning a competition”, enthuses François Marna, one of the choreographers and founders of the Start 2 Step association.
Shows and canvassing with traders
“What makes us strong is our determination and the passion we have for dance” summarizes Rafaël, 13 years old. So close to a world contest, their determination has quadrupled. But they have a big challenge. Find 3000 euros per child to leave. So, that day, they tour the shops accompanied by Cécile Avédikian, also a choreographer and founder of the association. “We don’t have a federation so to collect donations, in addition to the subsidies that we will receive from the municipality and the department, we do shows and door-to-door sales with traders” explains the young woman. The kitty put online has, for the time being, brought in nearly 3,200 euros.
