In a nursery school near Toulon, the director set up a program centered on empathy. The effects are felt in the classroom as well as in the playground.
In La Seyne-sur-Mer (Var), in Clara Olivier’s class, the children mime their emotions. This is part of the “Empathy” program, implemented in this nursery school. At 5 years old, they already know how to put all their feelings into words. In the main section, every Thursday is entirely devoted to the study of emotions. On the agenda, getting to know each other better, to live well together. “Also to know the emotions that other children have in their hearts“, explains a student.
No more children left behind
A poorly managed emotion can lead to school violence firstly, and harassment secondly. The school principal initiated the system, based on empathy, seven years ago. During various workshops, she invites her students to find solutions to defuse conflicts. At playtime in the playground, no child is left out. All school staff have been trained. In class, children draw their emotions, write them, or experience them during role plays.
