It is an almost impossible mission that awaits the new Haitian prime minister: to stop his country’s descent into hell. Haiti’s transitional presidential council on Tuesday chose Garry Conille to become the new interim prime minister, two and a half months after the forced resignation of Ariel Henry. Except that this appointment did not really arouse enthusiasm among the population.

Indeed, for Haitians, Garry Conille is not unknown: this 58-year-old gynecologist has already held positions at the highest level of the State, remembers Tamara, director of a real estate agency in Port-au- Prince. “Garry Conille is like food, it’s reheated, since he was already Prime Minister. He was chosen quickly. I only learned last night that he was appointed Prime Minister. There is no there was no political debate, there was nothing, we just imposed it”, she judges.

If this appointment does not arouse great hope among the population, it above all causes distrust, because Garry Conille is known to be close to former American president Bill Clinton. According to a former Haitian minister who wishes to remain anonymous, he enjoys the support of the United States, accused of interference in Haitian affairs.

“Gary Conille is the Americans’ man, the man we placed. But he is not the man who can solve the problems of the Haitians. If he does not know the Haitian reality, how will he will it solve the problems of Haitians?”

The task facing Garry Connille is colossal. His absolute priority: to restore order in a country plagued by gangs. For this, it will be able to count on a multinational force whose deployment expected last week was postponed.
