24% of French people say they suffered serious abuse in childhood. In Gironde, a Maison de la Parentalité tries to prevent violence by supporting young parents in their new role.

Families for whom the birth of a child has upset an already precarious daily life. In the Maison de la Parentalité in Talence (Gironde), a four-month-old baby lives with his 15-year-old mother. The young girl is followed by a nurse to learn the right gestures, such as changing a diaper. “Whether they are adults or minors, they must be helped to take care of themselves in order to then take care of their children”, explains Élodie Lamarque, a nurse. For a year, Issam has been living in this center with his son. Today, they are accomplices, but the young man of 20 years had to learn everything from his role as a father.

An increase in admissions

On the decision of a judge or a proposal from a social worker, children are housed with their parents in this Maison de la Parentalité for a few months. A new family will soon be welcomed. She will be autonomous, but under the surveillance of the team to detect possible signs of malevolence. Since 2020, child protection services in Gironde have taken care of 30% more children. “The idea is always to keep one or two studios free in order to be able to accommodate urgently”specifies Franck Bottin, the director of the departmental center for children and families.
