“The unspeakable is regularly told in Gaza”, reported a spokesperson for the UN agency on Tuesday March 26. Living conditions there are such that young people told UNICEF that they hope “to be killed” in order to put an end to this “nightmare”. Speaking by videoconference from Rafah, James Elder assured that the situation there is reaching new heights in terms of “darkest chapters in human history”.

“Yesterday, Unicef sat down with teenagers, many of whom said they were so desperate that they wanted this nightmare to end [au point] that they hoped to be killed”, he said, during a regular UN press briefing. As the Gaza Strip, besieged by Israel, teeters on the brink of famine, calls have grown for Israel to open more crossing points into the Palestinian territory. According to the United Nations, before the war, at least 500 trucks entered there daily. Today there are around 150.

“In Gaza, vital aid is hampered”

The Israelis “have the right to control and inspect every gram, every liter, every kilo of everything that enters Gaza”noted a spokesperson for the UN Office of Humanitarian Affairs, Jens Laerke, before denouncing that between March 1 and 22, a quarter of the 40 humanitarian aid missions in northern Gaza were refused.

“There is an old crossing point that could be used in the north, 10 minutes from where these people are begging for food. 10 minutes. By opening this crossing we could end this humanitarian crisis in the space of a few days. But it remains closed”, he protested. In Gaza, he concluded, “vital aid is hindered, lives are lost, dignity is violated”.
