Silvia Caruso, Deputy Director of Emergency Operations at WFP, World Food Program, is the guest on 19/20 info, Friday October 20.

A first humanitarian aid truck is expected to enter the Gaza Strip on Saturday, October 21. “The situation is dramatic in Gaza”, says Silvia Caruso, deputy director of emergency operations at WFP, world food program. She points out that before the crisis, 1.5 million people needed food aid and that the situation had worsened. The population lacks food, water and electricity.

Needs estimated at 100 trucks per day

“We are in the process of mobilizing around 1,000 tonnes of food. Most of it is ready-to-eat food. Because the lack of electricity means that families have difficulty cooking,” explains Silvia Caruso, who asks “not a one-off access”but one “sustained access to this assistance”. The UN has estimated Gazans’ needs at 100 trucks per day. Planes bring food aid and medical aid waiting to enter the Gaza Strip. “Every minute counts and every minute makes a difference today for the people of Gaza”she concludes.
