Cars without a license, a convenient and safe way to get around, are all the rage, especially among young people. Report in Trouville, in Calvados.

Before lessons, every morning in the parking lot of a high school in Trouville (Calvados), there are more and more license-free carts. “I live in a remote village, I don’t have a bus so I have to have a car without a license to get around”, explains Lou Szambeveber, a final year student.

Carts without a license are motorized quadricycles, a niche segment in which manufacturers have tried to penetrate, in vain, since the 1950s. Today, the market is buoyant. Almost 100 cars were sold in Deauville (Calvados) in 2021. “It is a fun vehicle, which allows mobility for future drivers and allows independence in their daily lives”, explains Damien Mias, Mary Citröen sales advisor. The vehicles are customizable, with accessories delivered to your home. Depending on the contribution, leasing can cost only 20 euros per month, and the cart costs 6,000 euros.
