In the United Kingdom, in Brockworth, the village of Cooper’s Hill organizes a traditional cheese race in which participants roll down a hill. A race that is not without risk.
A wheel of cheese rolls down the hill at more than 100 km/h, closely followed by a horde of runners on its heels in a chaotic procession. Cheese racing is an old English tradition elevated to the rank of extreme sport. Located in the west of England, Cooper’s Hill resembles a lush green ski slope. It is guaranteed 100% inclination. On a slope where it is difficult to stand, hotheads from all over the world come to challenge each other.
But be careful, this race is formidable and risky: it causes several injuries each year. However, the competitors flock to the start. “You don’t have to be afraid of pain. And probably missing a few neurons. I’m missing a little of both, so I tick all the boxes”, sums up a participant, all smiles. At the foot of the hill, at the finish line, the local rugby team awaits the runners. “We avoid the cheese and we stop people before they crash into the fence”assures a rugby player.
