In 2023, 45 journalists and media collaborators have been killed in the course of their duties, reports Reporters Without Borders in its annual report that franceinfo was able to consult on Thursday December 14. Among them, 23 were killed in conflict zones, and 22 in peace zones, writes RSF in its document. In 2022, there were 61 people who lost their lives.

This number of journalists killed in the course of their duties reached its lowest level since 2002, with 33 losing their lives, despite the war between Israel and Hamas. Since the start of the conflict in the Palestinian enclave, 13 journalists have died in Gaza, three in Lebanon and one in Israel.

According to RSF, “the drop in the number of journalists killed can be explained in part and in certain areas by an increase in the security of journalists”. Furthermore, writes Reporters Without Borders, journalists who go to cover wars are better trained and better equipped.

Mexico is the worst country in a “peace zone” for journalists

Peace zones can also be dangerous for the profession, with 15 journalists dying this year investigating corruption and organized crime. In this regard, Mexico is the worst country for the profession, four journalists have been killed there this year.

The number of journalists or media collaborators imprisoned or held hostage is also falling. There are 521 of them detained compared to 569 in 2022. Among them, more than half are in China, Burma, Vietnam or Belarus.
