Ice Falls | Partial closures of three bridges

The Victoria, Samuel-De Champlain and Jacques-Cartier bridges were temporarily closed Thursday due to falling ice, making driving on these three highways dangerous.

However, all lanes were reopened around 2:30 p.m. on the Samuel-De Champelain Bridge, in both directions.

The bridge was first closed completely at the end of the morning before being partially reopened at the beginning of the afternoon. Motorists could travel at low speed during the ongoing icebreaking operation on the bridge structure.

On the Victoria Bridge, only one lane is available allowing traffic in both directions.

A lane was also closed on the Jacques-Cartier Bridge to allow de-icing of the structure.

On Twitter, the Minister of Transport, Geneviève Guilbault, indicated that “urgent icebreaking operations force the closure, complete or partial, of certain bridges in Quebec, in particular Samuel-De Champlain and Victoria in Montreal. We are in communication with the bridge managers. Priority: user safety.

The partial closures of three major links between Montreal and the South Shore are also complicating traffic already affected by weather conditions.

More details to come.
