Winner of the first stage of the Tour de France on Saturday, and now wearing the yellow jersey, the French rider looks back on this special day.
Having just recovered his yellow jersey, the current leader of the Tour de France, Romain Bardet, winner of the first stage on Saturday June 29, spoke to France Télévisions. “It’s a little early to realize that. I had this first step in the back of my mind for a long time, but to hope for it… I wanted to play the game to the full.” The 33-year-old rider, who is competing in his last Grand Boucle, took the opportunity to pay tribute to his teammate Frank van den Broek, who accompanied and helped him throughout the breakaway, thus reminding us that this yellow jersey was “sharing”.
The DSM-Firmenich PostNL rider also looked back on his difficulties during previous editions of the Grande Boucle. “When I came to the Tour I was in a tunnel because I had the pressure of the general, the expectations, etc… he recalled. And that ate away at me. I’m lucky that here, as a team leader, I’m given all the freedom to go all out one day and then get back up completely the next day and do the gruppetto.” At the start of the second stage, Sunday in Cesenatico, he will start with the yellow jersey on his back. Never too late.
