On the night of October 24 to 25, Hurricane Otis devastated the seaside city of Acapulco, Mexico. Two days after the tragedy, the situation on site is chaotic. Some residents deplore inaction from the authorities.
Gutted buildings facing the sea. The famous seaside resort of Acapulco (Mexico) no longer has anything heavenly about it. Entire sections of wall were torn out. Open-air living rooms, bedrooms, lounges, blown by wind gusts of up to 315 km/h. Mud clogs the streets, there are at least 27 dead. “It’s a disaster. We don’t see help, we don’t see authorities. People don’t know what to ask, who to contact.”deplores a resident.
A million people to rescue
Satellite images show the extent of the damage. The mud covered an entire neighborhood. It overwhelmed the city stadium. The pontoons of the port of Acapulco have disappeared. There is still no electricity. Water and food are lacking. So, everyone rushes into the devastated stores to take what they can, giving rise to dNumerous scenes of looting throughout the city. There are still too few soldiers on the outskirts to help nearly a million people. The airport is still closed. So, hundreds of people are now fleeing the city by road.
