the hurricane Fiona transformed Friday evening into a post-tropical cyclone. Already, more than 14,000 homes have lost power in Nova Scotia. More than 1,000 homes on Prince Edward Island were plunged into darkness by strong winds that could reach 145 kilometers per hour on Saturday, said Bob Robichaud, meteorologist for Environment Canada.

According to him, the power of the hurricane Fiona could exceed that of the hurricane Johnwhich devastated Halifax in 2003. Experts even expect one of the most powerful storms in Canadian history.

Earlier Friday evening, Maritime residents stocked up on essentials and barricaded themselves in their homes to prevent damage from the storm. Up to 200 millimeters of rain could fall in areas affected by the hurricane Fiona Saturday.
