London is preparing for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. The event will be broadcast all over the world. Friday September 16, Anne Sylvain was on the set of 12/13 to talk about the cost of the crown and the royal family for the British.
As the British crown experiences a change of monarch following the death of Elizabeth II, the question of the cost of the royal family may arise. The point is however very sensitive for the royal family. “This year, the British monarchy cost 119 million euros. This is the first time that the bill for British taxpayers has passed the symbolic bar of 100 million eurosexplains Anne Sylvain, on the set of 12/13 , Friday, September 16. So of course, there are the family trips, the lifestyle of these majesties, but also the renovation of Buckingham Palace. In fact, it costs 1 euro 50 per British citizen per year, 89 cents if you exclude the renovation of Buckingham Palace.” For example, Buckingham Palace personnel costs amount to 27.5 million euros, cleaning costs to 800,000 euros, food costs to 684,000 euros…
But the royal family also brings in money for the British. “In 2017, for example, the monarchy brought in just over 2 billion euros for the country in the form of tourism, derivative products: mugs and other gadgets, for example with the effigy of the late queen.” There are also the big, high-profile events, like Harry and Meghan’s wedding, which cost just over 51 million euros, but brought in 1 billion 15. The births of the children of William and Kate meanwhile brought in 894 million euros. “We must not forget what is called ‘soft power’, that is to say the image, the glamor that it represents, series like The Crown”says Anne Sylvain. Thus, 77% of Britons support the monarchy.
