Faced with the shortage of personnel in emergencies and in maternity wards, the unions are calling on hospital employees to a major mobilization on Tuesday, June 7. They are demanding better salaries, to bring back caregivers who have left the public for the private sector.
Interns in medicine or nurses, they work day and night in the public hospital. According to them, the wages do not follow. Rémi Goidin, 25, is an intern in the North. This doctor in training receives 1,611 euros net per month, for 65 hours of work per week. “There, it’s less than the hourly minimum wage. We have the impression [d’avoir] a lack of recognition that we really need given the mental and physical difficulty of the studies and the investment it requires”he said.
His income is melting in the face of bills: 800 euros in rent, 400 euros in gasoline, or even 200 euros for shopping. At the end of the month, Rémi Goidin has only 46 euros left. “When I started medicine, I was oriented towards the ideal of the public hospital, and the more I am in the reality of things, the more I am heading towards a career in the private sector”, he acknowledges. Sylvie Péchard, she remains faithful to the public. A night nurse in Paris for 28 years, she receives 2,200 euros net, to which are added night and Ségur bonuses, i.e. 2,600 euros per month. “It’s true that we are not rewarded”she believes.
