Cannes Film Festival: how did the famous red carpet arrive in France?
(franceinfo)

The Cannes Film Festival has not always been entitled to its famous red carpet for the rise of the steps. Narrative.

The Cannes Festival (Alpes-Maritimes) rhymes with Croisette, cinema, and above all climbing the steps of the Palais des Festivals, under the lenses of dozens of photographers. What would the event be without its red carpet? At its beginning, in April 1951, the festival was hosted at the Palais Croisette, created especially for the occasion. It will take place there for 36 years, without a red carpet to welcome the stars.

In 1982, the festival moved to the Palais des Festivals, still without a red carpet. We had to wait until 1984, thanks to the journalist and presenter Yves Mourousi, responsible at the time for reorganizing the ritual of climbing the steps. It is inspired by the Oscar ceremony and its red carpet, used by Americans since 1961. Today, the Cannes red carpet is a must-see in the city. The crimson red was replaced only once by a black carpet. It was in October 2020, for the last day of the festival, a few hours after a terrorist attack claimed the lives of three people in Nice (Alpes-Maritimes).
