how are the championship calendars constructed?

The moment is always eagerly awaited by the supporters. The Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 calendars were unveiled on Friday June 17 during a communication on Twitter. We know in particular that Paris-Saint Germain and Olympique de Marseille will face each other on October 16, 2022 at the Parc des Princes and on February 26, 2023 at the Stade Vélodrome.

But how are these calendars constructed? It is the Professional Football League (LFP) which develops them, according to several criteria.

First of all, the clubs make demands of the League. Among the requests is that of starting the season away if, for example, the pitch at the stadium is being repaired. A club can also ask to avoid playing at home on certain days, when another big meeting is held at the same time in the city. We can think, for example, of the Braderie de Lille or the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Monaco.

These wishes are then sent to the LFP, from the beginning of June. Then there are the requests from broadcasters. The latter – who are waging a war with hundreds of millions to obtain the rights – choose the ten most beautiful posters of the season, and thus propose dates for the retransmission of these meetings.

The League, which must also take into account the schedule of French clubs involved in the various European cups, as well as the balance of home-away matches. Finally, this year, another major constraint: the LFP had to deal with the World Cup which takes place in the middle of winter, from November 21 to December 18, 2022, in Qatar.

Once all these parameters have been integrated, computer software then establishes the schedules which are finally validated by the board of directors. A Ligue 1 which will therefore resume on the weekend of August 6 and 7 and will end on June 4, 2023.
