The earthquake that occurred Monday, February 6 in Turkey and Syria is the most powerful since 1999. Turkey is located in the most active seismic zones in the world. A sword of Damocles above the heads of the inhabitants, who often live in unsuitable dwellings.
Whole neighborhoods wiped off the map. On Monday, February 6, Turkey experienced one of the worst earthquakes in its history, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake, a magnitude not seen in this region of the world for more than 200 years. The epicenter is on the border with the neighboring country, Syria, along the East Anatolian Rift.
Buildings that do not meet seismic standards
Turkey is located on the particularly moving Anatolian tectonic plate. It is gripped by the Eurasian plate to the north, and the Arabian plate to the south. Much of Turkey is therefore moving westward, about 2 cm per year. In 1999, these movements caused the death of 17,000 people. Despite the national shock and the multiple alerts, the country would still not be prepared for such shocks. Some experts believe that buildings do not meet seismic standards.
