In Ille-et-Vilaine, 26% of the housing in the commune of Saint-Malo is second home. The town hall does not hesitate to overtax these homes to favor year-round residents.
Saint-Malo (Ille-et-Vilaine), is a popular coastal tourist town. Laurent Moisson owns an apartment, a second home that he lives in 40 days a year. In 2024, his housing tax is expected to increase by 45%. According to his calculations, he should pay 582 euros in additional tax on the municipal share. “I’m not going to change my lifestyle. I’m going to continue using this apartment.”he assures.
Many homeowners are attracted to Saint-Malo and 26% of homes are second homes. The city is facing a housing shortage. “There is not enough housing for everyone in Saint-Malo”says Gwendoline Verseil, head waiter. After two years of searching, a father of two has finally managed to buy a house. The price per square meter has increased by more than 50% in five years. To put an end to this explosion in prices, the mayor no longer hesitates to impose additional taxes.
