Home invasion of rare violence in Calgary

Two men in search of drugs and money kidnapped a family of six, including four children, before torturing the parents with an electric weapon, to finally realize that they had been in the wrong house.

The brutal home invasion, which happened around midnight last Saturday, was described by Calgary police on Wednesday.

According to the police force, the two suspects burst into the residence armed with a semi-automatic firearm and an electrical energy weapon (taser). The two men then tied the parents with plastic ties and tape, while confining the couple’s four children to another room.

The thieves then demanded jewellery, money and drugs from the parents, who tried to plead that the two men had gone to the wrong place and that they would find nothing at home.

“The men began ‘tasing’ the two adult victims repeatedly, threatening their lives and threatening to harm their children. One of the adults was able to reach his phone and dial 911, leaving the line open for dispatchers to hear what was going on,” Calgary police said.

In doing so, police were able to come to the aid of the family and arrest the two suspects.

“The family is now safe and has been connected to the resources needed to help them recover from this horrific event,” Sergeant Krista Ryan said.

The two suspects, 34-year-old Manitoban Tyler Justin Kowal and 32-year-old British Columbian Jessie Leslie Lunan, now face a slew of charges, including home invasion, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon and death threats.

Both also end up with charges for breach of probation, while Kowal was the subject of a Canada-wide search warrant in connection with another crime.
