Hockey: young center Owen Beck signs a three-year contract with the Montreal Canadiens.

The Montreal Canadiens have liked what they’ve seen of young Owen Beck so far in training camp, and the organization has rewarded him with a standard three-year rookie contract.

The contract covers the 2022-23 to 2024-25 seasons and is worth a total of US$2.465 million.

If he plays in the NHL, Beck will earn $775,000 22-23, $835,000 in 2023-24 and $855,000 in 2024-25. The agreement also includes signing bonuses of $95,000 each season.

If Beck plays in the American League, he’ll get $82,500.

The 18-year-old forward played for the Mississauga Steelheads in the OHL last season, recording 51 points (21 goals, 30 assists) in 68 games. The centerman finished third in the league with 817 faceoffs won in his rookie season.

He also distinguished himself academically with an average of 93%, thus winning the Bobby-Smith Trophy, awarded annually to the student-athlete of the year in the OHL.

The Port Hope, Ont., native was drafted 33e overall in the 2022 draft.
