Candidates for the presidency of the new Hockey Canada board of directors will all be studied by an independent committee, the national federation and its 13 members decided on Saturday by mutual agreement.
Not only will the independent committee have to approve candidates for the presidency, but it will also have to approve all those who wish to obtain a place on the new version of the board.
However, it was not immediately specified which criteria will be assessed by the independent committee or which members will form it.
At a special meeting, Hockey Canada and its members also decided that the new board of directors, which will be elected later this year, will serve for a one-year term as a “transition board.”
In a press release, the national federation explains that the transition council “will mainly deal with the execution of urgent tasks which must be carried out in the short term”.
The Hockey Canada Board of Directors normally has a two-year term when formed.
These decisions are the first to have been taken since the tabling of an interim report by former Supreme Court of Canada Justice Thomas Cromwell, who was given the mandate to lead the independent review of the governance of the federation.
All positions on the board of directors will be up for election in the election to be held on December 17, 2022, since all current board members resigned this week in the wake of the scandals that have rocked the federation for several months already.
