Tim Hortons and Imperial Oil have joined a growing number of companies that have chosen to halt their financial contribution following Hockey Canada’s handling of an alleged sexual assault.
The restaurant chain said Wednesday it was “pausing support” for the upcoming World Junior Men’s Hockey Championship in Edmonton, pending details on how Hockey Canada intends to take “firm and definitive action.”
Imperial Oil, which is the presenting sponsor of the National Women’s Under-18 Championship through its Esso brand, also announced that it is withdrawing its support for the World Junior Championship while continuing to sponsor programs geared towards young people and women.
Scotiabank, Canadian Tire and Telus announced on Tuesday the suspension of their sponsorships, until the companies are satisfied that the right measures are taken to improve the culture of hockey.
The federal government froze public funding for Hockey Canada last week, in response to its handling of the alleged sexual assault and out-of-court settlement.
Hockey Canada settled a lawsuit last month after a woman claimed she was assaulted by members of the 2018 world junior championship gold-medal team on the sidelines of a gala and golf event four years ago in London, Ontario.
None of the allegations have been proven in court.
