In Nigeria, 500 people have died in historic floods that have hit the country in recent weeks. Nearly 1.5 million people have been forced to flee their homes in the southeast of the country.
The canoe is now the only means of transport available to reach the town of Lokojain southeastern Nigeria. The landscape today is unrecognizable. The exceptional rains of recent weeks have caused flooding. Nigeria had not experienced such a disaster for ten years. The water engulfed everything, from the fields to the houses. The city ofOgbaruin the southeast of the country, was also not spared by the floods. All the streets are flooded, and we had to adapt quickly.
Officially, the floods in Nigeria caused the death of 500 people, and pushed towards the exodus nearly 1.5 million inhabitants. New climate refugees who live, for many of them, in camps set up by the authorities. It is urgent, because before the floods, these displaced people lived off the land they cultivated. The priority is therefore the food that must be transported to these camps. The situation could get even worse, as the rainy season is not over.
