This is a huge blow achieved by the Colombian authorities in the fight against drug trafficking. “Otoniel”, the biggest drug dealer in the country, has been arrested.
Applause from the crowd as Dairo Antonio Úsuga gets off a plane in Bogota (Colombia). The man, nicknamed “Otoniel”, was until his arrest, on Saturday 23 October, one of the biggest drug traffickers in South America. Every moment since its capture is filmed by televisions. For Ivan Duque, “this arrest is only comparable with the fall of Pablo Escobar in the 90s”.
Like the legendary drug lord Pablo Escobar, the hunt for Otoniel was long and required the intervention of all the country’s police forces. Up to $ 5 million was promised to anyone helping to capture the trafficker. Cautious, Dairo Antonio Úsuga lived apart from the population. His arrest took place in northern Colombia, in a forest region. Nearly 22 helicopters and 500 police officers were needed, including logistical assistance from the United Kingdom. Otoniel is expected to be extradited to the United States shortly.
