Hamas accuses Israeli army of killing at least 35 people in displaced persons camp in Rafah

The Palestinian presidency and Hamas have accused Israel of committing “massacre” during an airstrike that hit a center for displaced people on Sunday, May 26 near Rafah. The army of the Hebrew State, they assure, has “deliberately aimed” the Barkasat camp, managed by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA). According to Hamas authorities, at least 35 people were killed and dozens more injured in the bombing. The Palestinian Red Crescent says it transported a “large number” deaths and injuries.

Israel says it targeted two Hamas officials. The Israeli army, for its part, responds that one of its planes had “hit a Hamas compound in Rafah where major terrorists were operating”including two leaders of the Islamist movement in the West Bank, Yacine Rabia and Khaled Nagar. She believes that the strike was “carried out against legitimate targets under international law”but she adds that she had “aware of reports that several civilians in the area have been injured”.

The NGO Amnesty International is calling for an investigation into other strikes. The organization mentions three Israeli bombings carried out on April 16, on the al-Maghazi refugee camp in the center of the enclave, and on April 19 and 20 in Rafah. These “devastating strikes” killed 44 Palestinian civilians, including 32 children, according to Amnesty International, which is now calling for the opening of an investigation by the International Criminal Court.

Aid trucks from Egyptian territory. The Rafah crossing point, on the border with Egypt, has been closed for several weeks and the launch of the Israeli ground operation. Cairo refuses to reopen the terminal as long as Israeli troops control the Palestinian side. According to the media al-Qahera News, she however specified that a total of “200 trucks” had headed towards the Israeli crossing point of Kerem Shalom. The number of vehicles that passed the checks is unknown.
