Gun violence | The SPVM will do prevention in schools

A multidisciplinary intervention team will be deployed in Montreal high schools to prevent violence and the use of firearms among young people, announced the City of Montreal and the Montreal Police Service (SPVM).

The school team, made up of civilians and police officers, will be at work this fall.

The project aims to carry out prevention in schools, particularly in neighborhoods affected by armed violence. “The School Team will also provide intervention support on the ground with young people who behave violently or who are at risk of committing or being subjected to violence, in collaboration with the community organizations which are essential”, indicates- we by press release.

“By launching the school-team project, we will be able to better support staff in their action strategy, particularly in neighborhoods affected by the problem of armed violence, and support young people outside of schools, with the community environment. It’s a great mobilizing force that will help reduce violence committed by young people in Montreal,” said Alain Vaillancourt, head of public security on the executive committee of the City of Montreal.

We also announce the addition by the police force of a civilian professional specializing in cybercrime in connection with the various virtual platforms.

“We can never emphasize enough the importance of prevention with our young people to divert them from crime and the necessary collaboration with our partners to properly support our young people at risk of committing or being subjected to violence and support their families,” explained Vincent Richer, Deputy Director at the SPVM.

The team in numbers

  • 3 criminologists (psychosocial workers) who will work in partnership with socio-community agents
  • 1 civilian analyst who will paint the different portraits of the issues, problems, intelligence or crime affecting young people.
  • 1 professional-advisor in training who will support the team as well as the Prevention and Urban Safety Division in the development of prevention tools for young people.
  • 3 specialized preventionist police officers who will intervene where the needs are felt.
  • 1 civilian professional specializing in cybercrime. It will identify trends in the impact that social media can have on situations of violence.
  • 1 detective lieutenant in charge of the team.
