Lara Zamani and Dimitry Saint-Louis wanted to turn this small delicatessen, both a café and a refreshment bar, into a living space. Recently opened on Van Horne Avenue in Outremont, Super Condiments highlights the work of the craftsman and the quality of the products. The kind of place where you can hang on to your feet to sip a coffee when you’ve come to buy a packet of pasta, a dozen eggs or a bottle of wine.

“We really wanted to create a place to live, that from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., everyone can find something there […] We wanted something warm, to put a little piece of ourselves in there,” says Lara Zamani, co-owner of the business. She is of Franco-Iranian origin, comes from Longueuil. They met in France and have been established in Quebec for six years.

“It was a long-time dream to have a food business, says the one who was an interior decorator by profession. We have always been passionate about everything that revolves around food. This is what binds us a lot. When Dimitry had just left a job as a mixologist, they made the decision to go into business during the pandemic.
On the coffee side, the couple works with beans from the Québec Fantôme roaster. It serves pastries from Maison Bon Bec and Cristina (@cris.patisse.montreal on Instagram), a neighborhood pastry chef, as well as a selection of sandwiches that change weekly based on seasonal ingredients. Except the buttered ham which will certainly become a classic. Soups and salads should also be added to the menu.

At the end of the day, the bar atmosphere sets in with a selection of draft beers and wines by the glass, mainly natural, which can be accompanied by a charcuterie board. Within a month, the couple plans to set up a bistro menu made up of dishes to share such as mimosa eggs, pissaladières and other delicacies from the south of France where they used to live. On the grocery side, there is a fine selection of condiments, artisanal marinades and preserves, products highlighting the Quebec terroir, sweets and a few basic foods. A nice addition to the gourmet offer of rue Van Horne.
