The day after her meeting with Governor General Mary Simon, Prime Minister François Legault said she “still has work to do” in her French language learning.
The appointment of Mr.me Simon had sparked controversy in July 2021, because she did not speak this language.
She was received with great honors by the Prime Minister for his first official visit to Quebec on Wednesday.
The interview took place partly in French and partly in English, he said in a press scrum Thursday morning in parliament.
“Mme Simon is in the process of taking personal French lessons, but there is still work to be done, ”he concluded from his discussions with her. He pointed out that she was “able to utter a few sentences”, in her words.
“It is surely not ideal” to have a head of state who does not speak one of the two official languages of the country, he agreed.
Remember that the CAQ advocated the abolition of the office of lieutenant governor, the representative of Mme Simon in Quebec, but according to Mr. Legault, it is not a priority for Quebecers.
