The spokesperson for Québec solidaire made this statement during an interview with RDI as part of the program Cinq chefs, unelection.

“Me, I think that between 60,000 and 80,000 immigrants, immigrants per year, that makes good sense,” he said.

To settle the question, he said, a supportive government would set up a committee of experts to determine Quebec’s reception capacity.

“We will follow the recommendations of this committee. It will help resolve the labor shortage, we will regionalize immigration, we will promote francization in the workplace, in short, we will treat immigrants, immigrant women in Quebec, like humans, not like numbers”, he declared in the face of questions from the heads of antenna.

Currently, the Legault government claims that Quebec’s integration capacity is 50,000 newcomers annually. However, Quebec welcomed approximately 70,000 immigrants this year, in order to catch up after the suspension of entries into the country caused by the pandemic.

For Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois, the current thresholds are partly responsible for the labor shortage. “If it were enough, there would be plenty of people everywhere in Quebec,” he said.

The QS spokesperson claims to be tired that Quebec’s reception capacity is “the object of petty politics”. “Because when we play petty politics with immigration, we here may have a lot of fun, but there are people on the ground who suffer because it tends to fuel prejudice,” says -he.
