The Girondins de Bordeaux will be able to start playing football again. After a summer marked by an administrative relegation to National 2, following the club’s financial problems, the Bordeaux team will finally be able to talk about the game, after weeks of fearing for the club’s survival. On Wednesday, August 28, the club with the scapular made official the arrival of 24 players for its National 2 and National 3 teams.
The Girondins de Bordeaux were forced to forfeit the previous weekend against Stade Bordelais in N3, while the first two matches of the season in N2 had been postponed following the administrative relegation. To avoid the risk of a general forfeit for the season, automatic after three forfeits, they urgently put together a group including young local amateurs, but also former Girondins glories.
With 154 professional matches with Bordeaux, Rio Mavuba (40 years old) has thus taken on a license, just like Paul Baysse (36 years old), who was still wearing the Ciel et Marine jersey in Ligue 1 two years ago. The two former captains of the Girondins “have agreed to give the club a helping hand if needed, particularly at the start of the season”specifies the club’s press release.
For the rest, the list is mainly composed of regional players, free of any contract, including former players of Libourne (N2), a neighboring club that has filed for bankruptcy, like Malick Seck and Over Mandanda, brother of Steve Mandanda. Two professional players have also accepted the challenge: Lassana Diabaté, who arrived from Valenciennes, and Yanis Merdji, ex-Concarneau striker.
The club with the scapular also announced the arrival of Bruno Irles on its bench, former coach of Troyes in particular. Reinforcements that will allow the Girondins de Bordeaux to start their season on Saturday August 31 against Stade Poitevin.
