The man could, however, receive the label of “high risk defendant”. An order for an assessment in this sense was requested Tuesday by Judge Alexandre Dalmau. Tanvir Singh will be in strict detention for the duration of the assessment, which is 30 days.
According to the report’s findings, the Crown will decide whether to file a motion to declare Tanvir Singh a “high-risk accused”, he told The Press the Crown prosecutor, Mr.e Annabelle Shepard.
The court may declare the person a high-risk defendant if they are found not criminally responsible, but have a high likelihood of violent recidivism. This label makes it possible to considerably restrict his outings outside the psychiatric hospital.
Assault last March
The attack in question in this case occurred on the boulevard du Tricentenaire, near the rue Notre-Dame, on March 14th. Around 11:30 a.m., two young girls “were driving on a sidewalk when they were approached by a 21-year-old man who suddenly attacked a young girl by beating her up”, the spokesperson said at the time. of the Montreal police, Raphaël Bergeron.
Passers-by intervened to put an end to the attack. Almost at the same time, patrol officers passing by intervened and arrested the man. Transported to the hospital, the victim suffered in particular from a nervous shock and had been seriously injured, having received several blows to the head. However, his life was not threatened.
Tanvir Singh had been charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm and possession of a weapon for a purpose dangerous to the public peace.
The accused will return to court before Judge Dalmau on August 22. “We will then read the report and decide whether we present a request for him to be accused at high risk”, concluded Mr.e Shepard.
