Girl assaulted in Pointe-aux-Trembles | Accused suffered from mental illness, psychiatrists say

The young man accused of having attacked a 10-year-old girl in the middle of the street last March in the east of Montreal was not criminally responsible for his actions because of his mental disorders, concluded the psychiatrists in a “comprehensive” report filed in court on Wednesday.

Tanvir Singh faces four counts, including aggravated assault, in the case that shocked the public. In broad daylight, the 21-year-old man allegedly beat up a young girl who was walking on the sidewalk, on Tricentenaire Boulevard, in the Pointe-aux-Trembles sector. The girl reportedly received several blows to the head during the assault before being rescued by passers-by.

Two weeks after his arrest, Tanvir Singh was first found fit to appear in court. A more comprehensive assessment of his criminal liability was then ordered by the court.

According to Crown Prosecutor M.and Annabelle Sheppard, “section 16 of the Criminal Code” on the defense of mental disorders “would apply”, in the eyes of experts from the National Institute of Forensic Psychiatry Philippe-Pinel.

“It’s a report that seems very comprehensive. We are really going to take the time to read it well beforehand, ”commented Mand Sheppard in a scrum, after the hearing at the Montreal courthouse.

It is impossible to report the remarks made during the brief hearing, since the defense lawyer, Ms.and Mileva Camiré, whispered in English while addressing the court. And in the hubbub of this busy room, the words of Judge Flavia K. Longo were also incomprehensible.

In the dock, Tanvir Singh didn’t say a word and seemed unfazed

The case will return to court on June 7. At this stage, the Crown could request a second opinion or agree with the conclusion of this report and suggest that the judge declare the accused not criminally responsible.

“If someone is found not criminally responsible, they are not necessarily released, they are detained at the Psychiatric Institute,” said Mr.and Shepard.
