Gérald Darmanin “favorable” to extending the duration to 210 days, particularly for sexual crimes

This is a proposal from his successor at the Ministry of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau. On the other hand, generalizing to “all people who have an OQTF” poses a problem of space in detention centers, underlines the EPR deputy.

The former Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, declares himself Thursday October 3 on franceinfo this Thursday “favorable” to Bruno Retailleau’s proposal to extend the detention period to 210 days, extending it to sexual crimes, as is already the case for terrorists.

This proposal was put on the table after the murder, at the end of September, of Philippine, which sparked debate and emotion across the country, due to the criminal and administrative background of the suspect, a 22-year-old Moroccan, convicted of rape and awaiting deportation. “European law allows it,” says the ex-minister. “France is not going through with the possibility of detaining people who can be expelled from the national territory”says Gérald Darmanin.

However, the former Minister of the Interior believes more “questionable” generalization for “all people who have an OQTF”as the current Minister of the Interior wishes. According to him, this poses a problem of space in detention centers.

“The judge considers that, as the Ministry of the Interior does not have much chance of returning the person of such a nationality to his country of origin, he is releasing him,” explains Gérald Darmanin. There is “1 300 places” currently in detention centers, “I added 400, we must continue to increase the number of places.”

It also brings, more generally, its “support” to Bruno Retailleau “because I know how difficult the job is.”
