Gérald Darmanin announces the opening of a second detention center in Lyon in early 2023

A second administrative detention center (CRA) will be opened in Lyon (Rhône) at the beginning of 2023, announced Gérald Darmanin in an interview with the Progress (Paid Item), uploaded Friday, July 29. The number of places available in the agglomeration will thus be doubled, to reach 280 places.

The Minister of the Interior is going to Lyon on Saturday to inaugurate the first CRA, with 140 places. His evening announcement relates to another establishment, which will be completed in six months by renovating the old building, which is currently closed.

This decision “will make it possible to double the reception capacity of foreigners in detention”underlined Gérald Darmanin. “We don’t have enough places in the detention center and that’s also the purpose of my visit.” The Minister clarified that “200 new border police will be assigned there, it will be a very important effort”.

Gérald Darmanin also stated that “35% of criminal acts are committed in the Lyon metropolitan area by foreigners”.

During his visit to Lyon on Saturday, which will be boycotted by the mayor of the city, Grégory Doucet, the minister must meet police officers recently attacked in the Guillotière district. After this incident, Gérald Darmanin had implicated a foreign suspect in an irregular situation, finally exonerated, but promised that he would be expelled anyway.

To strengthen the fight against crime in Lyon and more particularly in this district, Gérald Darmanin also announced in his interview with the Progress the arrival of a second CRS company, ie 70 people, which will be based in the agglomeration.
