The town hall of Gennevilliers, in Hauts-de-Seine, has decided to buy a farm to produce vegetables for the canteens of its nine daycare centers. They will be supplied from January 2025.

In a nursery in Gennevilliers (Hauts-de-Seine), it’s mealtime. On the menu: vegetables and fruits supplied by purchasing centers. Soon, the products will come directly from a farm that the town hall has decided to buy. It is located 75 km from the town, in Argentières (Seine-et-Marne). 25 hectares of land and all the agricultural equipment will be sold for one million euros.

The town hall will entrust management to farmers to cultivate the approximately 40 varieties on the estate. The town hall of Gennevilliers wants to supply the nine daycare centers in the town with its vegetables from January 2025. For two years, Toulouse (Haute-Garonne) has been one of the cities experimenting with this system. Its farm has been producing wheat to make baguettes since 2022. Of more than 200 nursery and elementary schools, only about a third can benefit from it, as the farm’s surface area is not large enough to supply them all. Another problem: a general shortage of qualified agricultural labor.
